I'm letterboxing with my young son, we started out with a small generic stamp raided from the craft supplies box . The boy and I have now made him his "own" stamp using funky foam letters prit stick glued onto more funky foam. tis kinda bodgy BUT is it better "form" than a generic image.
Just wondering what more experienced boxers/ box setters think.

Letterboxing in all its forms is for anyone so interested in it.
There are those who box and never put out a stamp of their own. There are those who put out bought stamps which others refer to as as 'kids' or 'Micky Mouse' stamps.
Others spend a lot of money on bought stamps but well designed.
Lastly there are the hand cuts, some are no better than the kids or MM`s others are to design quality and well crafted.
At the end of the day - do YOUR thing and enjoy it! Leave others to decide on what they want to collect!.

I would make sure your box is well sealed before putting your foam stamps out. Prit stick and foam won't last long once wet.
ahh, I wasn't clear enough in the OP. sorry, the bodgy stamp is his "personal stamp" for marking visitor books with. We just enjoy finding them. boy was disappointed not to find a box on meldon hill on saturday, found the probable hidey hole, but no box :-(
So, if you spot a wonky

stamp in a visitor book, it was us.
wooo hooo. I'm rather excited as I've just carved my first 2 stamps today.
Having been given some tools and a slab of speedball material for my birthday I can now create a "proper" personal stamp. Just got to decide what it should be. Neither of today ones, one says "happy birthday" and the other will be sited in a letterbox at some point.
The speedball material is lovely to crave, much easier than lino.

Excellent new UniS, let us know how you get on and if you don't mind would you possibly place a photo on here of your stamp impression?
I wonder how difficult it can be to hand carve your own stamps, looks very tricky to me.
stamp number 2 - probably destined for a letterbox. Looks very childish- BUT is a fairly accurate copy of a child's drawing.
The carving was actually pretty easy. letters were the hardest bit, but I'm happy enough with these ones, I don't mind it looking a bit " home made". I might invest in a size 3 carving tool, this was done with a size 2 ( narrow) and 4 (about 3mm wide).
no pic yet as havn't quite worked out how to put one in this forum.
McBump- have added impression from stamp as avatar.

Hi UniS
Well done for trying and actually cutting stamps. Do not stop there - keep doing it and you will acquire skills you did not know you had! My first attempt was very much simple lines. There is no better teacher than experience.
