Box on Sharpitor

Whilst out walking this evening, my boyfriend and I stumbled across the remnants of a box on Sharpitor.
I say 'remnants' as the box it was in (a blue California Innovations box) had the lid off and the side was cracked and has bits missing. There was no stamp, but parts of the book were left. Sadly, some person (or people) had burnt the book, and whats left of it had been left in the rain.
The only stamps I could make out were ones from a Bere Scouts, which may have been the second, and a stamp with a Magpie on. The was also an address, but it was from a visitor, I believe.
Judging by the dates, this box has been around for a long while, as the earliest date I could read was 2005, and the stamp was recorded missing in 2006.
The box is located south of the car park (with the water pool), in a cutting on the side of Sharpitor. It is behind some reeds. I did not move it, in case someone knew it was already damaged: what is left of the book is in the container and sealed as best as it could.

It is a terrible shame that there are people out there which would damage a box so mindlessly.

My friends and I once sited a box on Sharpitor (Burrator one that is). That was many years ago when I was a teenager.
After the box had been out for almost a year, we received a polite letter in the post asking us to remove it. Unknown to us at the time, Sharpitor is private property and no boxes were allowed. As far as I know that still stands today. I believe the Sharpitor Squirrel letterbox is on Leather Tor for that very reason.
It is sad that vandals do this sort of thing. Especially when the land owner/s can be nice enough to ask for removal in the proper way.

Interesting. However, do you know who owns/owned Sharpitor? I would have thought, given its location, either the Maristow Estate (as in Walkhampton common) or South-West Lakes (burrator). As far as I am aware both have letterboxes on their land.

I know it has previously been mentioned on this site (by Nik if I recall) that Sharpitor must not have letterboxes placed on it because it is private. However, the surrounding tors usually have boxes on them.

It seems it is owned by the Dartmoor Preservation Association. A description of the area involved is at http://www.dartmoorpreservation.com/land_holdings.htm

I honestly cannot remember. It was about 16 years ago now.
It was a nicely worded and polite notice. I also remember it saying that the Goad's Pond letterbox had special permission to be there.
