Filming on Dartmoor

Having just watched the war horse at the cinema, I have two questions;

1) where did they film the Dartmoor scenes. (Don't say DARTMOOR that would be irritating. lol) There is a church in the valley with no houses huddled around it. Is this the way it is or has it been "Improved" using CGI? I know the Dartmoor village in the film is in fact Castle Combe in the Cotswalds as I used to go there for the race track on the top of the hill, Doctor Doolittle among other films was filmed there, but it does make me wonder why Peter Tavy or Mary Tavy would not have done for these scenes?

This leads me on to my second question.

2) IF Steven Spielesburg asked YOU to suggest a setting on Dartmoor with impressive views to WOW his audience, where would you suggest?

Personally I think Steven did a good job, but surely it can be improved on by someone with "local knowlege"?

As for the film......... Thought it was great. If you are interested in what all the young men whoes names adorn the many war memorials throughout Devon, as every other county in the U.K. had to endure. GO AND WATCH IT! 9 out of 10 from me (had to deduct 1 point fot the HOLLYWOOD FAIRY DUST) Reg the ENGLISH Bullmastiff :wink:

The areas used on Dartmoor - Ditsworthy Warren farm and the race between horse and car - alongside Burrator reservoir.

From an article in the Herald Jan 10th 2012:Speilberg in an interview said ''There`s no place like it (Dartmoor) in the world''. '' When I got to Dartmoor I suddenly realised I had a third character that I needed to include in War Horse and that was the land and the sky''.

Some photos of the crew doing up Ditsworthy Warren Farm. The roof is made up of polystylene blocks as were the stone walls.[img="http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg69/FLO-21/DitsworthyFilmSet201000001.jpg" alt=""]

I haven't seen the film so don't know how it fits in, but at the time the film was shooting I was walking up from Dartmeet to Combestone Tor. As you pass through fields in the area 669725 marked on the map as Combestone, I was surprised to come across a large film unit setting up, and unloading horses in the fields going up the hill. Had no idea at the time what it was for, but presumably part of War Horse. Was this little hamlet/farm used in the film?
