Michelle and I were boxing on Belstone about 3 weeks ago and saw a large bird of prey on the Western slopes of the tors very near to the clanger. We've searched everywhere in books and on the Internet and the closest identification we've found is that of a male hen harrier. However, there is one discrepancy in that the male has a white/yellow beak whereas the bird we saw had a dark brown/black beak. The bird was about 2'', pale grey/white with black wingtips (not the shoes!). It's been bugging us and we wondered if anyone else had seen it or could help us identify it.
Thank you,

We're not convinced - the one we saw was whiter. It had a big black beak that looked like an eagle's. We've come to the conclusion that vivisection is rife on Dartmoor as the one we saw had the body of a hen harrier and the head of an osprey. Quite frankly, we're scared.

Thank you very much, but this isn't right either. We were struck by how large and white the bird was. It had black/dark brown bars underneath the wings and a black beak. Other than that, it was ostensibly white/light grey all over. Very puzzling.
