I was told by a friend that letterboxing was the best way to see adders... i was 13 and that sounded very cool - so friends and families spent lots of time on the moor adder hunting.... we collected over 100 letterboxes in our first season and that was without the catalogue...
Happy days - ps i am still searching for those adders

Dartmoor is covered in snakes. Adders tend to stick close to watery places as one of their favourites foods are frogs, toads and newts. One area that I have seen a lot of adders is down below Cuckoo Rock, Combeshead and Down Tor. Haytor is pretty good as well. April/May is a good time to see them when they are basking in the sun and still pretty slow at moving. In the heat of the summer [ yeah right ] be aware that they can strike just like a cobra!
